I received a ton of comments and emails about doing a tutorial on the above piece. I am happy to share how I made the above artwork for our master bedroom, it is really simple!
What you'll need:
One large scrap or custom cut piece of wood, take note of the grain on the wood so that it is as much or as little as you want (I found mine at Home Depot)
A small scrap of wood to hang your finished art
Wood stain in any color. (I used classic black gloss)
A paint brush and rag
A small tip paint brush
Paint for the lettering (I used white acrylic paint)
Paint tarp, or anything to protect your working surface
First, generously apply stain onto wood with a paintbrush. Let it sit for a couple minutes.
Rub stain with a rag, rubbing the stain in to wood as well as taking excess off.
Let dry, I gave mine a couple hours.
Decide on lyrics, phrase, or something personal to you or who you are making your piece for.
Using a very small brush tip begin to paint letters on. You might want to practice this on scrap paper if you are not comfortable with it. Also, you could use tape to help you create straight lines? Just a thought! My brush was a square flat brush that was only about a 1/4" wide.
(I was short on time, so I did a short phrase, for lyrics I started at the top left corner and when you run out of room, start as far over to the right that the rest of that line will fit.)
(I was short on time, so I did a short phrase, for lyrics I started at the top left corner and when you run out of room, start as far over to the right that the rest of that line will fit.)
Glue scrap wood onto back with wood glue, I'm sure a hot glue gun would be fine as well.
Let cool and you are ready to hang!
Have fun and email me your finished products! I'd love to see them!

Thank you for sharing! The second one looks darker - did you use the same black stain for the first one?

Yes, I used the same stain. I applied two coats of stain on the second one, and I'm sure it's the lighting. I took the photo early this morning with little sunlight.
Thank you so much for sharing! I can't wait to make one of my own! It really looks fantastic :)
I have to go to Home Depot today so I guess I will just add some things to my list! cannot wait to try it out. Thank you so much for sharing!!
Thanks-a-million for sharing, Nicole! I have been eyeballing your piece jealously since first seeing your home tour over at Made By Girl. :) I never would've known you stained the wood without this tutorial -- I just thought you were lucky enough to find some ridiculously cool reclaimed piece somewhere. Now, all that's left to do is wrangle a friend or two into a craft day, 'cause I'm totally making one of these for our guest room!
I love a good DIY project; I'll have to try this! If interested check out today's DIY sketched circles artwork inspired by West Elm on my blog!

OMG, I love this. Now I just have to choose a phrase or some lyrics.
Hi Nicole! Thanks for the great tutorial! I was so excited to do this as well as the chevron one you did, so I went down to my Lowe's and the guy there warned me that plywood bends over time unless it's nailed to a wall or something. So the art might end up warped. Have you found this at all? I'm guessing you didn't do anything to prevent this since you didn't mention anything.
Found your tutorial through Olive & A and I absolutely adore it! When I do it, I will DEFINITELY e-mail the photos your way!
Thanks for the tutorial! I'm going to try this tonight for an anniversary gift for my husband. It's my play on the traditional first anniversary 'paper' gift so I'm painting the lyrics to our wedding song. I'm excited but a little nervous to try!
i loved this tutorial .. thank you so much for giving me the perfect gift idea for my friends' homes.
